What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is placeholder text (sometimes called “dummy text” or “greeking”) used in the publishing, design, and web development industries. Its purpose is to fill a layout with text that visually resembles natural language content, allowing designers and stakeholders to evaluate the appearance of a design without being distracted by readable content.

The text itself is not random characters — it is scrambled Latin derived from a philosophical work by Cicero. While the words are real Latin, the sentences have been intentionally altered and rearranged so they don’t form coherent meaning. This makes Lorem Ipsum visually realistic (it has natural word lengths and sentence structures) while remaining semantically neutral.

The Origin: Cicero’s De Finibus

Lorem Ipsum has a surprisingly ancient pedigree. The standard passage traces back to Cicero’s “De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (On the Ends of Good and Evil), a treatise on ethics written in 45 BC. The original Latin text discusses the concepts of pleasure and pain from an Epicurean perspective.

The famous opening line “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet…” is actually a mangled version of “dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet” — meaning “pain itself because pain.” A 1500s printer (identity unknown) scrambled sections of De Finibus to create a type specimen, and this scrambled version has been the industry standard ever since.

Richard McClintock, a Latin scholar at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, traced the text back to Cicero’s work in the 1980s, debunking the common myth that Lorem Ipsum was simply random gibberish.

Why Designers Use Lorem Ipsum

Lorem Ipsum persists for several practical reasons:

Focus on visual design. When stakeholders see real content, they instinctively start editing the words instead of evaluating the layout. Lorem Ipsum keeps the focus on typography, spacing, color, and hierarchy.

Realistic text distribution. Unlike repeating “text text text” or keyboard mashing, Lorem Ipsum has natural-looking word lengths, sentence structures, and paragraph rhythms. This produces a more accurate preview of how real content will look.

Industry convention. Every design tool — Figma, Sketch, Adobe InDesign, and every CMS — supports or includes Lorem Ipsum generation. It is the universal language of “this is a placeholder.”

Language neutrality. For international projects, Lorem Ipsum avoids the bias of using any specific language during the design phase.

Alternatives to Lorem Ipsum

While Lorem Ipsum is the standard, there are situations where alternatives work better:

• Real content drafts — The best placeholder is actual content. Even rough drafts reveal layout problems that Lorem Ipsum hides (headings that are too long, bullet lists that overflow, etc.)
• Hipster Ipsum, Bacon Ipsum, Cupcake Ipsum — Humorous alternatives that use themed English words. Fun for internal mockups, but the readable English can be distracting
• Lorum (design-aware) — Generates text with realistic heading lengths, paragraph counts, and list items that match common content patterns
• Language-specific Lorem — For non-Latin-script languages (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese), character-appropriate placeholder text is essential to evaluate right-to-left layout, character spacing, and font rendering
